Looking for Your Input

This is something I should do every year … ask you, the library users (and owners), what the library needs to be doing today and in the future.  It’s a necessity for long-range planning.

Here is the basic scenario.  The library district population is now approximately 35,000.  It will probably approach 60,000 within 20 years.  The library was built to accommodate the needs of 30,000 or so and is already getting quite “tight” as we’ve added extra shelving to accommodate a growing collection.

We do, of course, weed the collection of unused titles, but it continues to grow.  Moreover, much of the growth is due to the popularity of DVDs and such … formats that were very limited when the library was expanded 10 years ago.

There are many unknowns.  Will people continue to read paper books instead of their electronic versions?   Will high-speed internet service make DVDs obsolete?  Will more people mean more groups needing meeting room space?

There’s no new library in the immediate future, especially as we’re caught up in a recession. But it’s always a good time to ask questions.

You can reach me by phone (847-356-7711 x210) or by e-mail (bwatson@lvdl.org).

Volunteer in the Community
You can now find many community volunteer opportunities through our website, www.lvdl.org. Go to Community at the top of this page and click on “Volunteer Hub” in the sidebar. There are several organizations listed, with many volunteer activities to choose from.

Lake Villa Area Community Events Calendar
The library is now hosting a community events calendar on our website. Calendar entries have limited space and appropriateness will be determined by the editors. Due to space constraints, the calendar will focus on events sponsored by non-profit, governmental, business, and community organizations. Events from individuals and individual businesses will not be included. Entries may be sent to either
eventscalendar@gmail.com or eventscalendar@lvdl.org

Look for more information on our community pages as we will have our local web directory and virtual community bulletin board available soon!

BookArt Contest winners announced

The library's BookArt Annual Contest for Kids celebrates reading and creativity. This year, we invited children ages 5 through 12 to draw an original bookmark that illustrates a scene or character from their favorite book. Local art teachers selected winning bookmarks from the 155 entries we received. Click here to view the winners!

Library Closings

The library will close at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 26 and will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, Nov. 27.
